[Also in Division A5] The invention comprises compounds of formula wherein R is a group of formula wherein each symbol R 1 is H or C 2-4 aliphatic acyl, and R 2 is C 1-3 alkyl, C 2-4 aliphatic acyl, tetrahydropyran-2-yl, or -SO 3 M, where M is alkali metal. The compounds wherein R 1 is acyl and R 2 is other than SO 3 M are prepared (a) by the Koenigs-Knorr synthesis or (b) by esterification or etherification of the corresponding 3-ols, and are convertible by hydrolysis to the corresponding compounds wherein R 1 is H. The compounds wherein R 1 is H and R 2 is -SO 3 M are prepared from compounds of the above formula wherein R 1 is acyl and R 2 is H by reaction with sulphamic acid and treatment of the resulting sulphate ester with an alkali, and are convertible by esterification into the corresponding compounds in which R 1 is acyl.
