PURPOSE:To produce a target for a magneto-optical recording medium having a uniform compsn. by packing a composite body consisting of an alloy or metal powder contg. a rare earth metal and bar materials contg. iron into a metallic container and subjecting the container to hot compression molding after heating in a vacuum state. CONSTITUTION:The ground rare earth metal-transition metal alloy powder 2 is packed into the stainless steel container 1 which is a hermetic container. As Fe rod 3 is inserted during grinding to form a composite body. The above- mentioned rod 3 in preferably incorporated 18.5-8.0wt.% in the composite body contg. the container 1. The container 1 is then subjected to vacuum evacuation through a vent pipe 4 and to heating evacuation by heating and holding. The pipe 4 is thereafter partly press-welded under heating to hermetically seal the container 1. This hermetic container 1 is subjected to the hot compression molding together with the composite body. The large-sized magneto-optical recording medium having the uniform compsn. distribution of the sputtered thin film, a long life and mass productivity is thereby obtd. |
