Recovery of iron from slag - obtd during prodn of non-ferrous metal

An Fe contg. slag from prodn. of non-ferrous metal is treated to recover the Fe by introducing the slag in liq. state into a suitable receptacle in which is contacted by high temp. reducing gas. Partic. the gas is obtained by using an oxy- fuel burner operating substoechiometrically with (un)mixed reformed or natural gas introduced into the receptacle from above onto or into the slag at e.g. 1600 degrees C.
