PURPOSE:To industrially advantageously and continuously produce an alcohol from pentoses, by supplying the pentoses and hexoses into a tank for breeding and fermenting microorganisms assimilable the pentoses, consuming the hexoses, taking out the treated solution from the tank, supplying the solution into a pentose-fermenting tank and subsequently fermenting the pentoses. CONSTITUTION:Pentoses (e.g., xylose) 11 and hexoses (e.g., glucose) 10 are supplied into a tank 1 for breeding and fermenting pentose-assimilable microorganisms and the pentose-assimilable microorganisms (e.g., Kluyveromyces.cellobiovorous) are bred while consuming the hexoses. A solution containing the pentoses and the microorganisms is taken out from the tank 1 for breeding and fermenting the microorganisms and supplied into a tank 2 for fermenting the pentoses. The pentoses are alcohol-fermented to produce ethanol. The fermented solution containing the ethanol therein is supplied into an evaporator 3 and the ethanol is evaporated under reduced pressures, followed by concentrating the evaporated ethanol to continuously produce the alcohol by the fermentation process. |
