PURPOSE:To obtain an optical switching device employing a laminated structure composed of an extra-thin organic film structure by a method wherein a pair of electrodes, an insulating or semiconducting region provided between the electrodes and a photosensitive region whose electrical characteristics are varied by the application of a light are provided. CONSTITUTION:A pair of electrodes 22 and 24, an insulating or semiconducting region 23 provided between the electrodes 22 and 24 and a photosensitive region 25 whose electrical characteristics are varied by the application of a light are provided. For instance, an ITO film is applied to the whole surface of a glass substrate 28 as the lower transparent electrode 26 and an amorphous silicon film is formed on the ITO film as the photoconductive layer 25 and a stripe Au film is applied to the amorphous silicon film by vacuum evaporation as the intermediate electrode 24. Further, ten layers of polyimide single molecular films are accumulated by an LB method to form the extra-thin film structure 23 on the intermediate electrode 24 and a stripe Al film is formed on it by vacuum evaporation so as to make right angles with the intermediate electrode 24 as the upper electrode 22. An electric source 27 for DC bias application is connected between the lower transparent electrode 26 and the upper electrode 22 and the current-voltage characteristics between terminals 21 are utilized.
