PURPOSE:To identify the format of a disk and to automatically assemble a disk driver by reading the track of the disk and detecting whether a servo pattern is recorded to the disk or not. CONSTITUTION:When a new disk 12 is inserted to a disk drive device 10, a controller 28 reads the track on the disk 12 by a head 16 and determines whether the servo pattern of a 480 TPI disk is detected or not with using a burst gate signal from a decoder 30. When the servo pattern of the 480 TPI disk is detected, the disk 12 is identified as the 480 TPI disk and a 480 position mode signal is outputted from a position compensator and inclination holding circuit 44. Then, a servo device is assembled so that the device 10 can be operated to the 480 TPI disk. When the 480 TPI servo pattern is not detected, the disk is identified as a 48 or 96 TPI disk and a 96 position mode signal is outputted. Then, the servo device is operated with a 96 TPI mode. |
