The ends of pipes (11,11') separated by a gap (12), are enclosed by a sleeve (13), the annular space (15) being filled with e.g. hemp or lead. Each identical flange (30) comprises segments whose ends have axial lugs (32) projecting from a cone-section. Each lug has two holes for bolts (29, 29') used to build the flange. The inner cone surface is smooth and has turned-over rims (44, 51) which, when the flange is pulled in by its axial bolts (39), press the ridges of a flexible seal-ring (20) against the outer wall of one pipe (16, 16') and an end-face (14, 14') of sleeve. ADVANTAGE - The lugs and ribs on the segments, and the disposition of lug-holes inhibit flange deflections under axial bolt-tension whilst preserving seal contact.
