The controlled slicing machine includes a system for gauging the size of a product to be sliced, defining the three-dimensional profile. The outline at the cutting position is then determined, and the required cut positions are determined to provide slices of a standard weight. A control is provided, responding to the measurement in order to effect the cut in the necessary position. The profile images are produced by using a video camera to take appropriate views of the product. USE - Provision of standard weight pieces of material - such as partially finished frozen food products.
