The manhole or hatch (10) e.g. for a storage tank has a flanged stub pipe (12) welded to the tank (14). The manhole cover (16) has a hinge pin (30) welded between two lugs 26, 28 and the lugs extend to two stop brackets (38, 40). The hinge pin fits into and hinges about two slotted lugs (22, 23) which extendfrom the stubpipe. The fixed lugs incorporate two lid restraining springs (44) which clip into grooves cut in the circumference of sealing pins (52) which fit into holes (54). When the cover is fully opened, the stopbrackets contact the raised elastic springs 44 which keep the cover in the open position. The complete cover may be removed by lifting it vertically from the closed position using the opening handle (36) and a cross bar (41). ADVANTAGE - The manhole cover is easy to remove to improve access and spring restraining clips keep the cover in the normal open position, thus increasing the safety of anyone entering the tank.
