The machine for automatically tying up bags e.g. small bags of tea has two mould halves (36, 38) which are closed up around the neck of he bag to be tied (44). Each half of the mould has a half section of a loop and knot path moulded into it. After closing the mould, a nozzle is brought up to the inlet orifice and aided by a stream of compressed air from a supply system (74, 76) the string or cotton thread (72) is blown through the mould until it can be gripped by the jaws (48). The connect length of string is dispensed from a spool (82) using a motorised drive roller (78). After insertion in the mould, the nozzle is retracted and a second set of jaws 46 grip the string at the entry side. The string is cut (84) and the jaws 846, 48) are moged outwards pulling the string tight and making the knot as the mould halves are opened. A ticket or labelling device (52) may be provided to identify the product. ADVANTAGE - The compressed air assisted mould provided a reliable method of automatically tying up containers.
