2,6-pyridine dimethanol di-2-propyl pentanoate (pyridinol valproate) (I), and its salts, are new esp. (I) hydrochloride. Valproic acid is treated with thionyl chloride to form the acid chloride, and this is reacted with 1/2 a molar equivalent of 2,6-pyridine dimethanol. The reaction is usually effected in an organic solvent such as dioxan or dioxan/pyridine, at a temperature below 30 deg. C. USE/ADVANTAGE - The compound is an anti-epileptic agent with a very low toxicity and, unlike sodium valporate, it does not cause hepatic disorders.
