PURPOSE:To obtain a base material for an optical fiber nearly free from water and structural defects and doped with a large amt. of fluorine by heat-treating a porous base material consisting of fine quartz glass particles in an atmosphere of a gaseous fluoride. CONSTITUTION:A porous base material consisting of fine quartz glass particles is sintered by heat treatment in an atmosphere of only a gaseous fluoride. In accordance with the progress of sintering, the partial pressure of the fluoride in the atmosphere is increased finally to 1atm. SiF4, SF4, CCl2F2, BF3, CF4 or Si2F6 may be used as the fluoride. |
