The expandible mandrel e.g. for rolling paper or tissue has an external cylinder (1) in which are cut groups of equally spaced slots (2). Each group of slots consists of three equally spaced openings around the circumference of the cylinder through which protrude leaf springs (4). One end ofeach spring is fixed to the outside of the cylinder, and the other end is fixed to an inner translating tube (3) e.g. by welding or melting. The inner tralslating tube has a pin (11) which slides in a slot (10) in the outer cylinder to limit the range of travel of the inner tube. A screw band nut fixed in the end of the tube are used to move the inner tube axially. As the inner tube is displaced, the springs expand or contract radially to grip or release the workpiece former (12). ADVANTAGE - The expandible mandrel has a small number of component parts which are cheap and easy to manufacture.
