PURPOSE:To obtain a satisfactory extinction ratio characteristic by providing a tensile body having a high Young's modulus in a prescribed position of a coating part which protects a fiber. CONSTITUTION:An elliptic buffer layer 9 and a jacket 10 are provided around an optical fiber 6. A tensile body 11 which consists of steel, aramide fibers, or the like and has a high Young's modulus is provided on the straight line connecting the center of a core 7 and that of a stress applying part 8 in the buffer layer 9. Consequently, a polarization plane maintaining fiber is cylindrically wound while keeping the direction of stress application fixed at the time of working this fiber for the purpose of producing an optical fiber gyro or an optical polarizer because the tensile body 11 suppresses the flection in directions other than one direction, and a satisfactory extinction ratio characteristic is obtained. |
