A position sensor with a coding carrier which can be moved with respect to a scanning device on which binary information items are provided on several parallel tracks in the form of areas having two different physical characteristics, a code word being allocated to each position as a result, and in which the information items are coded in such a manner that the binary value changes only in one track on transition from one position to an adjacent position.
