The device is used to change the timing angle between a machine part (1), which is preferably guided in a manner which allows it to be adjusted in linear fashion and is moved backwards and forwards periodically, particularly a valve element of the intake and/or exhaust valve of an internal combustion engine, and a drive unit (2) actuating the machine part (1). The adjustment of the timing angle takes place as a function of the operating states such as, for example, the rotational speed of the drive unit (2), the machine part (1) being held by a guiding part (3) which is guided in a manner that allows it to be adjusted in the direction of motion of the machine part and is in positive engagement with the drive unit (2). The machine part (1) can execute an adjustment stroke relative to the guiding part in its direction of motion, this adjustment stroke being limited axially on both sides and being damped by damping means, for which purpose two chambers (6, 7) are formed between the machine part (1) and the guiding part (3), these chambers being filled with damping medium, being connected to one another via at least one flow passage (4, 5) and having a variable volume. The volume of the chambers (6, 7) is determined by the respective axial position of the machine part (1) relative to the guiding part (3) and changes in inverse proportion to the latter. <IMAGE>
