Two different forms of Amyloid Protein Precursor (APP) can be detected and differentiated using nucleic acid probes, and hybridization assay techniques. The two forms of APP differ by the existence of an exon in one form having homology to serine protease inhibitors. Protein antigens can be used to raise antibodies that discriminate between APP-1 and APP-2 in an immunoassay. Discrimination between APP-1 and APP-2 is useful in determining the course of Alzheimer's Disease and Down Syndrome.
|
