A device for optical distance measurement for vehicles, especially between two vehicles, which device consists of a transmission and receiver unit which is preferably in the form of rows and is installed transversely with respect to the roadway direction, the emitted radiation from a laser light source operating in accordance with the pulse propagation-time method depending on the energy scattered back and received and being used for evaluation, characterised in that a semiconductor laser, especially a diode laser having a wavelength approximately in the range between 0.8 mu m and 1.0 mu m, is included in the unit as the transmitter, and in that its transmission power is auto-adaptively matched by a signal evaluation unit to the environmental conditions, especially to the visual conditions on the one hand and to eye safety on the other hand.
