In a method and an apparatus for regulating the thread tension at a winding station of a winding machine, at which a thread (2) is transferred from a spinning bobbin (1) onto a run-on bobbin which is set in rotation by a roller (8) via frictional contact, a thread tensioner (3) is controlled according to the deviation of the measured thread tension from a predetermined thread tension, the thread tension to be predetermined being defined, according to a predetermined run as a function of a diameter value (Dp) of the run-on bobbin which constitutes a measure of the diameter of the run-on bobbin and which is calculated from the product of the ratio of the rotational speeds of the roller (8) and the run-on bobbin (Nd or Np) and the diameter (Dd) of the roller (8). <IMAGE>
