A partly single-stranded and partly double-stranded nucleic acid probe containing a transverse-crosslinking compound covalently bonded to its double-strand region has a chelating agent for metallic ions bonded to the nucleic acid probe by a functional group of the transverse-crosslinking compound. This nucleic acid probe is useful for detecting nucleic acids by hybridization with formation of a hybrid double strand. Following successful hybridization, a solution of fluorogenic metallic ions is added, and after removal of the metallic ion solution and washing, the bonded metallic ions are extracted by means of a reinforcing solution. The hybrid double strand so formed is detected by the fluorescence of the metallic ions in the reinforcing solution.
