A cooking apparatus has a heating device consisting of an insulating plate 3 and a heating element 4 located on top of the latter below a cooking area. A metal vessel 6 placed on the cooking area is arranged by means of a metal detector 7 which is assigned outside a region covered by the heating element 4 and influences a control element for controlling the electric circuit of the heating element 4. In order largely to prevent interference, the insulating-material plate 3 together with the heating element 4 is covered by a screening shell 30 underneath, having a suitable cutout 31 in the region of the metal detector 7. In addition, the metal detector 7 can be operated by pulses, the heating element 4 being switched off for a short time for the pulse duration. <IMAGE>
