A nickel-in-silica catalyst is produced by precipitating nickel hydroxide from an aqueous solution of a nickel salt by addition of an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide, while maintaining the reaction mixture pH at 7 to 10.5, as measured at 20‹C, mixing the nickel hydroxide during or after the precipitation with a silica-containing material and heating the mixture thus obtained at 50 to 120‹C in the presence of an aqueous alkaline solution of pH of 11 to 13.5 to give a composition which on reduction with hydrogen for 30 minutes at 450‹C with a hydrogen flow of 30 l/hr per 0.5 g composition yields a catalytic composition less than the specified silica-containing material is kieselguhr which may be added to the reaction mixture in the form of an aqueous suspension.</p> |
