PURPOSE: To improve electrical characteristics by constituting three types of layers in a separator matrix, and by forming its intermediate layer as a catalyst layer. CONSTITUTION: A separator matrix 3 provided between a positive electrode 1 and a negative electrode 2 is made of porous electrical non-conductive material for example, like a felt made from an ultra thin glass fiber or propylene and the like, and is composed of three types of layers 8,..., 10. An intermediate layer 9 brought out of contact with the electrodes 1 and 2 is employed as a hydrogen/oxygen recombination catalyst formed of fine dispersed platinum or the other material acting as an active catalyst during recombination reaction. In this manner, this catalyst layer 9 performs the main function of the separator, or the separation of the electrodes 1 and 2, together with the layers 8 and 10. This can improve electrical characteristics of a battery. |
