A polymerisation process which comprises contacting at least one polar acrylic type or maleimide monomer under polymerisation conditions with (i) a tetracoordinate organosilicon, organotin or organogermanium initiator having at least one initiating site, (ii) a co-catalyst which is a source of fluoride, bifluoride, cyanide or azide ions or a Lewis acid, and (iii) an agent capable of interacting with the anion of the co-catalyst.
