A process for the purification and clarification of water in a flotation basin 3 in which a mixture of flocks and water with gas or air bubbles introduced at 2 flows up through a shaft 4 which is partly defined by a screen 5 with a curved upper portion 6, is characterized in that the ratio between the horizontal distance (L) between the upper edge of the screen and an overflow 7 for the flock and the vertical distance (H) between the upper edge of the screen and the water surface is maintained at a value of at least 5. The underlying layer of purified water passes towards an opening in the bottom at one end of the basin 3. In the embodiment described, impurities in the water are flocculated using aluminium sulphate and the pH is adjusted by the addition of sodium hydroxide. |
