Novel 1-aroylpropyl-4-aralkyl piperazines of the formula where R is H, halogen, or C 1-4 alkoxy, R 1 is H, halogen, NO 2 , OH, trihalogenomethyl, C 2-5 alkanoyl, monocyclic aroyloxy, C 1-4 alkyl, C 1-4 alkylthio or C 1-4 alkoxy, and A is C 1- 5 alkylene which may be substituted by C 1-4 alkyl or a monocyclic aryl group, may be obtained (a) by reacting a Grignard of formula where R<SP>1</SP> 1 is H, halogen, NO 2 , trihalogenomethyl, C 1-4 alkyl, C 1-4 alkylthio or C 1-4 alkoxy, and hydrolysing the product; (b) by reacting compounds of formula in an inert solvent; (c) by reacting a 1-aroylpropyl piperazine of the formula in an inert solvent; or (d) compounds of Formula (I) in which R is OH can be obtained from a compound of Formula (I) in which R is C 6 H 5 COO- by heating with a strong base or a mineral acid. Pharmaceutical compositions having psychtropic properties potentially useful as a remedy for schizophrenia, comprise a 1-aroylpropyl-4- aralkyl-piperazine or a salt thereof in combination with physiologically compatible adjuvants in forms suitable for injection or for oral administration. |
