A liquid filter comprises a housing 1 enclosing a hollow shaft 2, inclined at 30 to 60 degrees to the vertical, on which are mounted filtering discs 6, 7 with upper pervious surfaces, oriented at 30 to 60 degrees to the shaft axis, so that filtering is performed with the discs horizontal and the shaft then is rotated 180 degrees to orient the discs vertically (Fig. 4, not shown) facilitating cake removal therefrom. A bar 11 strikes a stop 12 at the end of the rotation to shake the discs, after which stop 12 may be removed and further complete turns of the shaft cause helical scraper 8 to push filter cake into sump 5 and through outlet 16. Inlet 14 is for filter aid slurry and liquid to be filtered, and air vent 17 facilitates filling and draining of slurry and liquid and introducing cake-drying gas. Filtrate outlet 15 may be used for introducing liquid or gaseous backwashing fluid. When residual liquid is drained after filtering, vent 17 may remain closed so that air is sucked into outlet 15 to loosen the cake. Fig. 4 (not shown) illustrates a housing with an enlarged sump and swilling sprays (13). Most of the discs 6 are circular, but end discs 7 are semi-circular (Fig. 3, not shown).
