Terracotta tiles are sealed by brushing their lateral and lower faces with one or more coats of varnish, which penetrates the tiles to seal their faces, allowing the varnish to dry for two hours, brushing on one or more further coats to form a gloss finish, and treating the upper face in traditional fashion. A tile sealed by the process is also claimed. The varnish is pref. polyurethane based. ADVANTAGE - The upper face ofthe tile is not marred by traces of saltpetre or other salts.
