Two terminals e.g. computers, microcomputers, word processors or facsimile machines, are connected via the telephone system. An additional unit is interposed between the terminal and the line either externally or built in. In the transmit direction it comprises a data emitter which receives data from the terminal via a fibre optic cable at 9800 Bauds, stores it, detects when the receiver is ready and transmits to line at 1200 Bauds. In the receive direction it includes a receiver which receives data at 1200 Bauds and stores it until the terminal is ready, at which point it sends the data to the terminal via a fibre optic cable at 9800Bauds. ADVANTAGE - Releases lines whilst other tasks carried out at terminal.
