The invention is directed to a system for automatically adjusting the multiple gain taps in a transversal equalizer so as to minimize the errors in a received signal caused by intersymbol interference and noise. In a preferred embodiment, the sign of a delayed replica of the sampled input signal is multiplied by the sign of a derived error signal to form an incremental signal, which signal is used to increment a selected gain tap in the transversal equalizer by a fixed amount and in a direction determined by the sign of the incremental signal. This type of procedure is applied to each of the tap-gains of the transversal equalizer to drive the kth tap-gain, for example, to the value that minimizes the cross-correlation function.
