Safety device for vehicles

A description is given of a safety device in a motor vehicle, the device relating to a divided steering column 1 which can be released from a specified deceleration in the event of a frontal impact via an acceleration-sensitive locking coupling 4. After being released in the event of an accident the upper steering column 1a with the steering wheel and the impact-absorbing element can dip forwards into the lower steering column 1b. Means (compression spring 10, damper 11) are provided which absorb the impact of the head in a gentle and defined manner (below the load limit HIC 1000) but at the same time counteract excessive rotation of the head which causes disadvantageous overstretching of the cervical column. <IMAGE>
