In a process for the interleaved recording of data for a plurality of data channels on a magnetic tape, the alternating azimuth tracks are subdivided in each case into a front + azimuth half-track, a front - azimuth half-track, a rear - azimuth half-track and a rear + azimuth half-track. Half tracks - in neighbouring azimuth tracks - which differ both in the "front/rear" attribute and in the "+/-" attribute are referred to as maximum-spaced half-tracks. The recording of the data values takes place in such a sequence that in each case two successive data values from the same input channel occur in furthest-apart half-tracks. This process allows full data interleaving to be accomplished simply for any number of channels.
