In the case of known connections, use is made of an outer sleeve 4 which overlaps the two pipe ends and, before the gas-tight welding to the pipe ends, is outwardly sealed by asbestos ropes for the filling of the pipes, e.g. with burnable gas. According to the invention, the use of asbestos, which is a health hazard, is to be avoided. This is achieved by connecting the pipe ends by means of an inner sleeve 3 which is sealed by a sealing material which is not a health hazard. The welding of the pipe ends to the outer sleeve 4 then takes place once the pipes 1 and 2 have been filled with the gas which is to be channelled.
