[Also in Division F2] In a method of manufacturing a rolling bearing in which the outer race ring 12 is fractured along a groove 18 to allow insertion of the inner race 16 and rolling elements 14, the outer race ring is rejoined by fusion welding the adjacent ends of the race at the fracture 20. A beam of charged particles, e.g. an electron beam is directed at one end of the fracture at a radially outward portion of the fracture. The beam melts the race along the bottom of the groove 18 and on removal of the beam, the fused material coalesces to weld the two ends of the race together. The fusion is controlled to occur so quickly that the raceway surface is not affected. The beam may be directed at the race radially instead of axially and the beam may traverse along the axial length of the fracture or pulses of electrons may be used to provide overlapping or space stitches. In an alternative embodiment, an insert 40 is placed in the groove 18 and the beam applied to melt the edges of the insert and the race. Alternatively the insert may be secured by resistance welding, one electrode being connected to the insert and the other to the edges of the groove.
