1,269,842. Iron or steel production. MIDLAND-ROSS CORP. Nov. 11, 1969 [Nov. 29, 1968], No. 55112/69. Heading C7D. A process for producing iron or steel comprises (i) feeding iron bearing material to a furnace, (ii) supplying heat to the furnace to melt the material, (iii) feeding a supply of metallized pellets containing carbon and at least one iron oxide and (iv) supplying additional heat to the furnace to melt the pellets and to cause the carbon to reduce at least a portion of the iron oxide. The quantity of iron present is preferably at least that required to reduce all the iron oxide in the pellets, e.g. 0À2% carbon for each 1À0% of iron oxide in the pellets. The metallized pellets may contain 0À5-2À0% carbon, 2À0-8À0% iron oxide and less than 0À01% sulphur. An electric arc furnace may be used. The iron bearing material may be scrap with or without pellets. An oxygen blow may follow to reduce the carbon content.
|
