In a process for making premium grade coke by heating black oil, or a mixture of black oil with other petroleum fractions, a diluent hydrocarbon fraction which does not coke is included in the black oil in amounts in the range 4 to 35% by volume of the feedstock, while the black oil is in the range 380‹ to 410‹ C. Black oil is the aromatic-rich residual fraction obtained by pyrolysing naphtha, gas oil, kerosene, or natural gas for producing unsaturated hydrocarbons, natural gas being in this context the C 2 H 6 , C 3 H 8 &c. remaining after removal of CH 4 from wet natural gas. The diluent fraction must have a B.P. of at least 380‹ C. at the operating pressure, and it may be added to the black oil and/or may form part of the feedstock by choice of the operating pressure according to the distillation characteristics of the feedstock. A coking temperature of 500‹ C. is mentioned, and delayed coking may be employed. |
