PURPOSE:To miniaturize the beam splitter by allowing the polishing surfaces of an optical fiber which is polished up to an adjacent part of a core to be opposed to each other, and interposing a dielectric layer whose refractive index is different from a refractive index of a clad of the optical fiber between these polished surfaces. CONSTITUTION:By using two polished substrates 15 on which a polished optical fiber 12 obtained by polishing and eliminating a part of the optical fiber up to the vicinity of a core 2 is buried and fixed into a groove of a grooved substrate 13, and each polished surface 16, 16 of these polished substrates 15, 15 is opposed and superposed. Between the polished surfaces 16, 16, a dielectric layer 17 whose material is a dielectric having a refractive index being different from a refractive index of a clad 4 of the polished optical fiber 12 is interposed. Accordingly, by reflecting an incident light beam leaking from the polished surface 14 of the substrate 15 by the dielectric layer 17, and also, allowing said light beam to transmit through, the incident light beam can be separated into each polarized wave. In such a way, the optical coupling part can be shortened, and the beam splitter can be miniaturized. |
