The invention relates to a gear transmission (1) for winning machines in underground mining which, to produce their advance movement, are equipped with at least one gear (10) which engages with its teeth in a toothed rack (9), extending over the length of the machine road, and in the tooth system of an intermediate gear (18) of the winning machine, the gear (10) being rotatably mounted inside a component (2) detachably fastened to the machine body or to the machine frame (4). The fastening means (5, 6) of this component (2) lie symmetrically to a horizontal and a vertical plane (7, 8). Only the gear spindle (17) lies outside the vertical plane (8) of symmetry of the component (2) in such a way that, by rotation of the component (2) through 180 DEG , the winning machine with the same drive unit can also be used on a toothed rack (9) having a different pitch. <IMAGE>
