This image transmission system is formed of a transmitter device 1 including a filming unit 10 for breaking down each image into points arranged along horizontal lines and for providing a first series of digital samples each of which represents the luminance of an image point, a filtering unit 11 for providing a second series from the first series, a sub-sampling unit 12 for providing a third series representing a portion of samples of the second series and a transmission unit 15 for transmitting the third series by means of a transmission channel and of at least one receiver device 2 including a receiver unit 21 for providing a series of samples and an interpolating unit having "n" interpolation characteristics for providing samples for utilization. This receiver device 2 includes a control unit 40 which determines one of the "n" interpolation characteristics. Application: high definition television. <IMAGE>
