In the engine retarder for a multi-cylinder 4-cycle IC engine, a rotary hydraulic pulse generator (85,85') is positively driven in synchronism with the engine crankshaft for sequentially supplying pulses of hydraulic fluid under pressure to predetermined slave pistons by means of ducts (80,92,94) interconnecting the slave pistons and the hydraulic pulse generator. A common valve control (120) is arranged in relation to the ducts to establish low presure fluid conditions in the ducts which occur during a fueling mode when the valve control is inoperative, and to establish high-pressure fluid conditions in the ducts when the valve control is operated during retarding.
