PURPOSE: To lower the combustion temp. in a filter by using a self-supporting ceramic structure specified in the internal surface area over the entire part of the pore system of the filter and open porosity. CONSTITUTION: The filter for cleaning the exhaust gases of diesel engines having an open-pore ceramic frothy body is formed by coating an open-pore object of a porous org. material in a combustible froth form, woolen form or the like with a ceramic powder suspension and burning a base material at 100 to 500 deg.C, then sintering the base material at an elevated temp. At this time, the filter consists of the self-supporting ceramic structure of 1 to 10 m<2> /l in the internal surface area over the entire part of the porous system and 55 to 92% in the open porosity. The combustion temp. in the filter is lowered if the filter for cleaning the exhaust gases of the diesel engines having such open- pore ceramic frothy body is used.
