The invention relates to the locating of people within a set of premises, for example in an office building or in an industrial site. A system is provided comprising a central computer and a set of chip card readers linked to this central computer. The computer is capable of identifying the premises in which the various readers are situated and of supplying, upon interrogation from a console, the telephone numbers corresponding to these premises. People who move from one premises to another possess a chip card containing a personal identification code and they insert their card into a reader each time they gain entry into a new premises. It is thus possible at any moment to know where a person is and to indicate the telephone extension number where he can be reached.
