The device for making use of the process of this invention comprises a bed of granular material 1 supporting purifying microorganisms, means for entries 16-14 of the liquid to be treated which are situated above the granular bed 1 so that during the biological purification process the liquid to be treated travels in a downward direction through the bed of granular material 1, a device 8-9 for removing the granular material at the base of the granular bed 1 and a device for transporting 8 the granular material towards a cleaning device 10 from which the cleaned granular material is recycled to the upper part of the granular bed 1, a region 15 of liquid phase to be treated being kept above the granular bed 1. <IMAGE>
