The invention, particularly suitable for multi-hull sailing boats, relates to a device for tensioning the sails 1 which allows the latter to be moved fore or aft of the boat; the back of the sail 1 is attached towards the stern of the boat so that a sternwards displacement tightens this fastener 5 and close-hauls the sail whereas a sternwards displacement will relax this fastener 5 and will allow the sail to point to the right or to the left. The mast 2, articulated at its foot, is held laterally by two shrouds 4 and its position is adjusted by pulling a rope 7 towards the bow of the boat. The lengths of the ropes and the fastening points are such that the resultant of the forces 9 in the sails passes approximately through the vertical of the centre of buoyancy 10 of the lateral hull when the wind is up, in a wide range or orientation of the sails.
