An apparatus (1) for carrying out a multistage generation of synthesis gas having a primary catalyst (4), an oxidation space (7) and a secondary catalyst (6) is to provide a solution by means of which energetically optimum values can be achieved, in particular, in a specifically smaller converted space, with the yield of the apparatus being in no way inferior to that of conventional apparatus.
