This invention achieves rapid arc extinguishing by interrupting the contacts as quickly as possible, and a high degree of current limiting is achieved irrespective of the current waveform and magnitude. In this case, the short-circuit current itself is used in a progressive manner, as a result of the particular manner in which it is fed to the contact point, to open the switching path virtually without any delay. At the same time, this interruption is carried out completely independently of the unlatching of the latching mechanism by the magnetic release. The arrangement of the rotary bearing point of the moving contact results in said contact not being touched by the base of the arc, so that welding is reliably prevented, but the electrical load also being so low that it is possible to dispense with an additional current-carrying braid, and in the arc being commutated without any delay. The course of the arc is in this case not impeded or braked. An additional blowing effect is achieved which is particularly useful for interrupting weak-current DC arcs.
