For a control device of a microcomputer or process computer system comprising a central processing unit (1) and various input and output devices (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8) for binary and analogue inputs and outputs and pulse inputs and outputs, a self-test for error detection in the peripheral devices (2 to 8) is specified. For this purpose, the signal levels of the input and output devices (2 to 8) are detected in the idle state and stored. Then defined voltage signals such as binary voltages, analogue voltages and pulse voltages, are applied to the input and output devices. The changes due to the transfer characteristic of the peripheral devices (2 to 8) are evaluated and checked for freedom from errors by the central processing unit (1).
