Straight chain carboxylic acids contg. 4-28C are prepd by (1) reacting ethylene with an Al trialkyl cpd with 2-4C alkyl gps to give a mixture of Al trialkyls of higher mol wt with 6-30C alkyl gps. (2) reacting the prod. with an oxidising agent to give a mixt of Al trialkoxy cpds (3) hydrolysing the alkoxy cpds to give straight chain 4-30C 1-alkanols, (4) fractionally distilling the mixt to remove 4-18C 1-alkanos and other materials in the same boiling range from higher boiling components and (5) oxidising the higher boiling fraction with HNO3 to give the (I).
