摘要 Composite panels 20, 21, have integrally formed joint-forming edge structures 30, 31 adapted to be bonded together 45 to form a load-bearing joint that is capable of withstanding loads that the panels are unable to withstand. A core material sandwiched between two composite skin layers makes up each panel. The joint-forming edge structures may include a flange portion 35, 41 extending from one panel skin, a flange-receiving portion 36, 42 extending from the other panel skin, and a web portion 37, 43 extending between the flange portion and the flange-receiving portion. The flange and flange- receiving portion of the joint-forming edge structure may each include at least one layer of composite material with high- strength fibers extending parallel to the joint-forming structure. The web portion may include at least one layer of composite material with fibers oriented approximately perpendicular to the joint-forming structure. The joined panels may be used in the construction of semi trailer bodies. <IMAGE>
