Compounds of the formula <CHEM> wherein the substituents have various significances are described, together with processes for their synthesis and intermediates, pharmaceutical compositions comprising such compounds and the use of such compounds for inhibiting cholesterol biosynthesis and lowering the blood cholesterol level and, therefore, their use in the treatment of hyperlipoproteinemia and atherosclerosis.
